From Wells Market Place and Town Centre you walk through the 'Bishop's Eye' to enter the Bishop's Palace grounds. The drawbridge of this gatehouse was last raised in 1831 when news that the Bishop of Bristol's palace had been burned to the ground in riots associated with electoral reform!
